Fruit-Free Green Smoothie

Fruit-Free Green Smoothie

This year, I desire….

  • to feel empowered in my body.
  • to speak my truth.
  • to feel vibrantly alive.
  • to trust my intuition.
  • to be madly in love.
  • to feel creative and inspired.
  • to eat green things and nourish my body.

Instead of starting the year with body hate/guilt/remorse, let’s start the year feeling strong and showing our bodies compassion and love.

Instead of starting the year on a diet and thinking about restricting, start the year feeling nourished and enjoying an abundance of real food.

Instead of starting the year thinking about what you want to change, focus on what you love about yourself.

This year if you’re desiring to take better care of yourself, have more energy, and feel comfortable in your body, start by choosing high-quality real food.

Digestive Aid Juice

  Digestive Aid Juice

Before we dive into talking about this beautiful digestive aid juice, let’s talk about digestion for a moment. Shall we?

Why is digestion so important? Without going into a complicated biology lesson (which I probably would not be prepared to teach), let’s simply think of what our digestive system does for us: it breaks food down into smaller pieces so that our body can use this nourishment to build new cells and give us energy. It’s amazing what our bodies do for us on a daily basis!

Since our digestion is essential for maintaining a healthy and happy body, anything that we can do to help aid our digestive system will increase our overall health. For example, this might include eating more fermented foods like saurkraut or kimchi, drinking kombucha, or taking probiotics to help maintain healthy bacteria in our guts.

It’s definitely important to think about the types of foods we are eating, but it’s also important to think about how we are eating those foods. Are you rushing through meals? Shoveling food down your mouth? Eating on-the-go? All of this contributes to digestive stress.

I know life is busy and I struggle with this too, but as much as possible, try to slow down at meals, chew your food properly, and allow your body a chance to fully digest your meal before running off to a new task. Your digestion and your body will thank you.

And now let’s talk juice.

Mean Green Juice

It’s time for another green juice! In January, I became addicted to juicing and it’s been exciting to connect with all of you on a similar juicing journey! I’ve gotten several emails from folks who were inspired by the juicing posts so this is something I will continue to keep up. (If you have recipes or photos to share, please share them with me over on the Facebook page or on Twitter.)

Today I have a special juicing video to share with you that includes a special (unplanned) guest appearance from my cat. And, for anyone that’s curious, you’ll also get to see my Hurom Slow Juicer at work. Let’s get juicing!

Mojito Juice

Mojito Juice

I’ve learned that I am a very indecisive person when it comes to buying produce.  It usually takes me three rounds in the produce section or at the farmers market before I feel ready to make some commitments.  And apparently, my indecisiveness is even worse when I’m buying produce online.

Picking out my SPUD juicing box each week has been the most excruciating process because I love them all!  Do I try something new?  Do I stick with an old favorite?  The options! In the end I went with my favorite Organic Dynamic Beauty Juicing Box for this week and I’m definitely glad I did because I discovered a brand new green juice combination that I adore.

Mojito Juice
I know that many of you have been excited and getting into juicing on your own so I wanted to remind you about this special offer from SPUD that ends in a few days.  SPUD has two juicing promotions going on until the end of January so if you’ve been looking for an affordable way to start juicing, this is your chance!
  1. If you sign up to buy a juicer (with weekly installment payments) and 6 months of juicing boxes, you’ll receive a $140 SPUD gift certificate! (This is a great option if you’re looking to do a long-term juicing program for yourself.)
  2. Or, if you do a one-time payment on a juicer, you’ll get 4 weeks of organic produce free ($140 value)!
Mojito Juice

Onto the juice! This Mojito Juice is one of my absolute favorite green drinks. I love the combination of cucumber, mint, and lemon in the juice because it makes me feel like I’m sipping a fancy cocktail, which also happens to be fabulous for my health! If you want a sweeter version of this juice, simply sub out the celery for an apple of your choosing.

If it wasn’t for SPUD’s Juicing at Home Program, there is a very good chance I would be sitting here eating a cupcake right now. We’ve finally got all of our boxes and furniture moved into our new place and things are getting a bit settled, but after hauling heavy boxes up and down stairs for three hours my body is craving less-than-healthy things. Luckily, instead of reaching for something sweet, I made a glass of this tasty green goodness. I think my cells are grateful.

If you read my post last week, you know that I’m testing out SPUD’s new produce boxes specifically for juicing and they are absolutely fabulous! This week I ordered their Organic All Vegetable Juicing Box, which included beets, carrots, celery, chard, cilantro, cucumbers, kale, parsley, a red bell pepper, and tomatoes.

With the moving craziness this week it was too hard to make it to the grocery store and having this produce box was a lifesaver! Being part of the juicing program has made it so easy for me to drink more fresh juice, even with my busy schedule the last couple of weeks. I can’t say enough good things about SPUD as a company (especially their commitment to sustainability) and the incredible convenience of having local, organic produce delivered. (I mentioned this last week, but if you are curious about trying out SPUD’s juicing program, now is the time because they have a couple of awesome juicing promotions going on this month!)

Green Goddess Juice
I love that this juicing box is all veggies (since I prefer green juices over fruit-based ones) and the variety of ingredients has made it easy to create many fun juice combinations! This was also my first time making tomato juice at home and I think fresh tomato juice is now one of my favorites (especially when combined with carrots and bell pepper).

I’m also pleasantly surprised to report that I have fallen head-over-heals for the Hurom Slow Juicer. To be honest, in the beginning I was a bit skeptical about trying a different juicer because I’ve always used centrifugal models (like my trusty Jack LaLanne juicer) and didn’t see the need to upgrade to a masticating juicer. I’ve been getting a lot of emails and comments from readers asking for more information about specific juicer models. I’ll have another post coming up later this week with more information about juicers and how to pick the best model for you so stay tuned!
And now to the juice… aahhhh, look at all the green!

Love Your Liver Juice and SPUD Juicing Program

Love Your Liver Juice

I’m really excited to share something fun with you today.  I was recently contacted by SPUD (Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery) and asked if I would be willing to try out their new juicing produce boxes and share them with you. An excuse to juice more fresh, local produce? Of course I was up for the challenge!

I’ve seen SPUD’s delivery trucks around Seattle, but didn’t know too much about their company until recently. The more I learn about them, the more I love their mission. SPUD was founded in 1997 as a sustainable way to directly connect local farmers with customers. 100% of their produce is either certified organic or locally and sustainable produced and over 50% of their products are sourced locally.

One of the things I love most about SPUD is that it’s incredibly convenient to order produce online and since the deliveries are consolidated into specific routes, one of their vans leaves with their warehouse with over 100 orders, reducing both pollution and traffic. Pretty cool, huh? SPUD currently serves 6 urban areas in North America: Seattle and the Eastern Puget Sound, the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles and Orange County, Vancouver, Victoria and Vancouver Island to Nanaimo, and Calgary (see their full delivery map here).

SPUD recently started a new Juicing at Home program and now offers Organic Juicing Boxes for people who are looking to boost their health by juicing and want a convenient way to save time and money. They have five different produce boxes to choose from and, if you need a juicer, you can even purchase one through their weekly payment program and start using it right away. (I love this idea!)

Love Your Liver Juice

I was really excited to try out SPUD because it’s hard to get local produce here in Seattle during the winter and a lot of produce in the grocery store just isn’t as fresh as I’d like it to be. I couldn’t wait to check out my box when it arrived! (Although Inspector Kitty beat me to it!)

Love Your Liver Juice

I opted to try out the Organic Dynamic Beauty Juicing Box, which includes apples, beets, carrots, celery, chard, cilantro, cucumber, ginger, kale, lemons, green bell peppers, and spearmint. I honestly haven’t seen local chard and mint this beautiful since summer! All of the produce arrived colorful, crisp, and fresh. I couldn’t wait to get juicing!

Love Your Liver Juice

SPUD even let me test out the Hurom Slow Juicer, which is one of the juicers they offer in their juicing program. I’ve always heard such wonderful things about this slow juicer so I was really excited to try it out for myself!

Love Your Liver Juice
I have to say that one of the things I loved most about SPUD’s organic juicing boxes is that is is so convenient compared to grocery shopping! I work downtown so I usually end up shopping at the Whole Foods nearby my office and then carting home groceries on the bus. This isn’t always easy since juicing tends to use up a lot of produce! I love that this box of beautiful, fresh local produce was delivered right to me – and all I had to do was complete a simple online order!
Having all this beautiful produce already at home has also made it incredibly easy to indulge myself in daily juices and I feel great knowing that I’m taking the time to do something really important for my health on a daily basis.
SPUD also has two juicing promotions going on for the month of January so if you’ve been looking for an affordable way to start juicing, this is your chance!
Love Your Liver Juice

The first juice I made was a liver detoxification juice, based on a recipe included in my produce box. This juice promotes the flow of bile and fat to and from the liver. The liver is the most important organ for metabolism and detoxification so if you are looking to lose weight and clean up your system, this juice is for you!

Juicing 101 [Video]

If you are looking to change your health, juicing is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I will readily admit that I am a juicing addict and I’m super excited to get you juicing as well! In today’s video I’ll show you how to make a basic juice at home, but first, let’s talk about some important benefits:

  • Drinking fresh vegetable juice allows you to consume more fresh fruits and vegetables, which we all know are full of good things like vitamins, minerals, and (since you are consuming them raw) beneficial enzymes. Fresh juice is also loaded with antioxidants that bind to toxins and help remove them from the body.
  • Fresh vegetable juice is very alkalizing, meaning that it helps to restore the body to its proper pH and  assist the body in detoxing.
    • Most of the foods in the Standard American Diet cause the body to be too acidic (e.g. animal products, sugar, fried foods, bread, alcohol, etc) and this acidity builds up over time causing inflammation and creating stress for our organs and tissues.
    • On the other hand, eating fresh, alkaline-forming foods like vegetables, vegetable juice, nuts, seeds, most legumes, water and some fruits, helps to strengthen the body and keep it healthy.
  • Since the juicer extracts the insoluable fiber from the fruits and veggies, fresh juice is very easy on the digestive track (making it perfect for anyone with digestive issues) and it makes the nutrients easy to absorb. Plus, since your digestive system doesn’t have to expend as much energy to break down juice, your body can spend that energy on healing your cells.
Drinking fresh vegetable juice is one of the best ways to increase your energy and detox your system!

I know from personal experience that I feel more energized when I drink fresh juice on a regular basis. It’s basically like a supercharged liquid vitamin for your cells! I have also found that drinking fresh vegetable juice helps to curb sugar cravings!

Green Lemonade

So, what should you juice?  For daily juicing, I recommend drinking 100% vegetable juice or including low-sugar fruits in your juice, such as green apples, lemon, lime, berries, and grapefruit. Since juicing extracts the insoluable fiber, this makes the natural sugars in fruit absorb more quickly causing your blood sugar to spike. And since juice is easy to drink (compared to eating the fruit or vegetable), it’s very easy to consume more sugar than you realize by drinking fruit juice.

Of course, if you are new to juicing or are drinking juice as a treat, it’s really fun to add fruit to mix it up a bit.  When you are just getting started, you might want to try adding half of a sweet fruit (like pears or red apples), then switching to low-sugar fruits as you get used to the taste. You can also “sweeten” your juice by including naturally-sweet vegetables like beets and carrots. You’ll find a variety of juice recipes throughout this post for some healthy inspiration!

Bok Choy Green Juice

Last week I took a three-day trip to San Diego.  It wasn’t supposed to be a vacation per se, but it ended up being an amazing wake-up call.  This trip was the first time in over six months where I had three consecutive days where I wasn’t working, working on my business, or blogging.   It’s amazing to me how badly I needed a break and didn’t even know it.

I pride myself on taking care of myself and being “healthy,” but as I have been focusing more and more attention on building my business, on top of working my full-time job, my focus on myself has slipped away.  I knew it was a problem that I wasn’t sleeping through the night anymore and was waking up with headaches in the morning.  I knew it was a big problem that I was working a full day at work and then coming home to work five more hours on my side business. I knew it was a problem that I felt overwhelmingly scattered, exhausted, anxious, and irritable, but I just thought this is how life was right now.
Not anymore.  Something had to change and it’s changing now.  As a result of this trip and having some time to get perspective on my life, I have already made huge shifts to my priorities and have noticed a dramatic change in my mood, energy, and overall well-being.  If anyone asked me a week ago, of course I could tell you about the benefits of taking a break, whether it’s a ten-minute break or a ten-day break.  But sometimes we forget to apply our own wisdom to ourselves… guilty.
So here is where I pose this question to you:  Are there things that aren’t working in your life at the moment that need your attention?  When was the last time you took a real break – big or small?

And, when was the last time you enjoyed a green juice?

This juice is simple.  Uber simple.  It’s got a slightly tart-sweet-bitter goodness that tastes clean and refreshing.  It is best enjoyed upon returning home from a flight when you have the need to feel hydrated, grounded, and centered.  Or, while lying on your couch indulging in a Prison Break marathon… guilty.
