In my real life outside this blog, I spent many years of my career working in non-profits serving low-income and homeless communities here in Seattle. One of my favorite jobs was when I had the privilege of working with low-income families and providing them with hands-on cooking classes and free food education for their kids. There’s nothing like teaching four year olds how to make a massaged kale salad to make your day.
When it comes to social change, I think one of the biggest frustrations I hear from folks is that we care about the world around us and want to help – but it just feels so overwhelming. And this is why, when it comes to making social change or personal changes like cleaning up your diet, I think we have to take it one step at a time and it starts with making a small difference.
Since working with youth and food security are so close to my heart, I am partnering with Opal Apples today to talk about their Youth Make a Difference Initiative. You might remember my Opal Apple Winter Salad a few weeks back (if you haven’t made this yet you seriously are missing out) where I raved about how I’ve fallen in love with these apples. I also love that the Opal Apple Youth Make a Difference Initiative funds youth-based initiatives serving communities in the U.S. where youth are empowered to take leadership roles in the project. In 2014, $75,000 was distributed to non-profits focused on addressing food security along with politics, nutrition and/or agriculture. (How amazing is that?!)
Opal is known as the apple with a purpose and their goal is to build a holistic, sustainable community by empowering members to put their dreams into action and then serve those most in need within the community.
1. Buy Opal! You can find the complete list of places to buy Opal apples here and know that a part of every purchase goes towards funding these initiatives (awesome!)
2. And you can also learn more here about what FirstFruits of Washington is doing to help communities in our backyard and around the globe.
I’m excited that together we can make an even bigger impact this year!0
