Let’s face it… the holidays can be a little stressful. Between cold, dark days, lots of projects to finish before the end of the year, retail madness, holiday office parties, and visiting family, I think most of us feel a little run-down and overwhelmed.
So, today I’m going to let you in on a little supplement that can help with all of this: magnesium.
(And let me just add in a quick disclaimer here that while I am a certified holistic health coach, I am not a medical doctor and this post is not intended as medical advice. This is simply my own research and my personal experience so please consult your naturopath or doctor before adding any supplements or making dietary changes.)
I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I supplement with magnesium because it plays a huge role in the body and it’s often hard to get enough from food due to mineral depletion in the soil.
Magnesium depletion in our bodies is linked with insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks, constipation and IBS symptoms, headaches and migraines, fatigue, depression, increased PMS symptoms, muscle spasms, and cramps. For myself personally, I’ve noticed that on the days I take Natural Calm (a magnesium supplement) I sleep much better and it definitely helps me with anxiety and lessening PMS symptoms.
Since many of us suffer from a lot of these issues, especially during a stressful time of year like the holiday season, I wanted to create a fun, festive mocktail that uses magnesium as a base to help all of us feel a little better and take better care of our bodies. It’s also a wonderful alternative to traditional holiday drinks and provides a healthier option for those of us who chose not to indulge in alcohol.
The ingredients for this non-alcoholic natural calm sangria are simple: a little fresh fruit, some Natural Calm, and water.
You can find Natural Calm at any health food store or online through Amazon and I have always used it because it’s easy to mix with water and really delicious. It also doesn’t contain added sugar (since it’s sweetened with stevia).
And just like that – you have yourself a tasty holiday mocktail!
Note: if you are serving this for others, please know that children under four, pregnant or lactating women, those with kidney problems, those with an obstructed bowel, or anyone currently on medication should consult with their doctor before taking magnesium.
I really loved using cranberries in this drink for color to brighten it up, but since I kept them whole, they didn’t add much flavor. If you wanted to infuse more of a cranberry flavor into the drink, you could slice the cranberries in half or sub another fruit like pomegranate seeds or orange slices.
If you are serving this for a crowd, I like to mix it ahead of time and let it chill in the fridge. Or, simply add ice and then serve immediately.

- Mix the Natural Calm with lukewarm water until well dissolved. Add the fruit and let chill in the refrigerator until serving, or if serving immediately, add the ice and serve.
