Do you ever have days or maybe even weeks where you feel like you’ve fallen off the “health wagon”?
In between moving and a lot of projects on my plate at the moment (including an amazing cookbook coming your way shortly!), I haven’t felt on top of my game when it comes to my health. I’ve also been dealing with a pretty bad pinched nerve in my neck which has made working out impossible at the moment. My body is definitely sending me signals that it’s time to practice my best self-care, go slow, and take it easy.
So, today I wanted to share some of my strategies that I use when I feel like I need to get things “back on track” when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.
When I was first launching my holistic health coaching business in early 2012, I used to have a video blog series on my health coaching website (note: this website no longer exists). For some reason I remembered this video the other day and it seemed like the perfect reminder for me to take some simple steps for my health and I thought you might enjoy it as well. So, I present you with my Reset Button Strategy:
Note: I no longer own the website healthyyoueveryday.com so please visit my blog here at insonnetskitchen.com for healthy living updates & recipes!
My reset button strategy is a quick way to start your day off on the right foot and get your health back on track.
Step #1: Start your morning with warm lemon water.
I am sure that you have probably heard of drinking warm lemon water before. The reason this is so beneficial is that lemon helps to restore your body’s pH balance and reduce your body’s acidity. Even though lemon is an acidic fruit, it has an alkalizing effect on the body.
Our bodies need to stay within a certain pH range to be healthy and with our modern foods and lifestyle, unfortunately, our bodies tend to be too acidic. Being acidic lowers our immune system and makes our bodies more prone to disease. So, take action by stocking your kitchen with a few lemons – make sure to peel them if they are not organic – and start your morning with a cup of warm lemon water.
Step #2: Go for a walk
One of the ways I can always tell that I’m not taking care of my body is when I wake up with a stomach ache. My digestion is the perfect gauge to tell me when I ate something that wasn’t good for my body, when I ate too much, or when I eat too little. The best way to get your digestion going in the morning is to drink your lemon water, then go for a 10 – 15 minute walk.
It doesn’t have to be a long power walk (although that’s great if you can do it!), but the idea is just to get some movement happening in your body. Exercise will help your digestion get back on track and will get your blood flowing. And if you can walk for 20 – 30 minutes, you’ll also get some mood-boosting endorphins in there which will really help to energize you and start your day off right.
Step #3: Get some green in there
The last step in my reset button strategy is to get some green in there! Whether you love juicing, green smoothies, or simply eat some kale at breakfast, be sure to start your day with some dark leafy greens! Some of my favorite green drink recipes include:
- My Mean Green Juice [with video]
- Green Goddess Juice
- Mojito Juice
- Green Smoothie 101 [with video]
- Kale Smoothie For Ladies
- Kale Smoothie For Kids
