Alright folks, it’s two days away from summer. Game on.
This means it’s time for picnics, fresh fruit, basil, late dinners, beaches, and easy beachy hair — without the chemicals!
Enter DIY Beachy Hair Spray. Last summer I whipped a batch of this up and I’ve been in love with it ever since. I’ve changed my formula a little and I think my new ratio is better for giving hair a fabulous texture and creating those loose, beachy waves that every gal wants in summer.
Let’s get to it!
First we’ll start by mixing up a bottle of our DIY beachy hair spray. It’s so easy!
If you hair already has some texture to it (like mine), this is all it takes to add the beachy effect. Then it’s all about the scrunching action to create the desired waves…
For folks with thin and super fine hair, sometimes the spray and scrunching itself might not be enough to create the desired texture. In this case, it’s time for some easy bobby pin curls to add additional waves.
Begin by grabbing medium sections of hair and twisting around your finger, then pinning each section to your head using bobby pins. Keep bobby pin curls in place until hair is dry, then let loose. When my hair was shorter, this was my favorite way to curl my hair because I didn’t have to use a curling iron. To help move the process along and make hair dry faster, you can also blow dry your hair with the pins in place.
As a final finishing step, I like to rub just a dab of coconut oil (a little goes a loong way!) between my palms and then scrunch hair again. This gives the hair a bit more shine. (Remember to just use a dab to keep hair looking shiny, not greasy.)
And that’s it! Now you’re ready for summer!
Note: A lot of gels and hair products contain potentially harmful ingredients. In this spray, I personally use the Alba Botanic Strong Hold Style Gel which holds really well, is paraben-free, and Alba does not do animal testing. However, this brand does contain wheat protein so if that is a concern, look for a gluten-free brand like Hugo Natural Styling Gel. If you use hair gel or other products, I’d recommend looking them up in the EWG Skin Deep Database to check the safety of ingredients.
- 1 cup hot (not boiling) water
- 2 tablespoons sea salt
- 1 tablespoon natural hair gel (I use Alba)
- 5 - 10 drops essential oil (my favorite combo is 4 drops of vanilla essential oil and 3 drops sandalwood essential oil)
- Mix the hot water, sea salt, gel, and essential oils. Pour into your favorite spray bottle. Shake well before each use.

Just curious… do you wash your hair, then spray and pin curl while wet or spray and after wet pin curls are dry and released?
Wash your hair, then spray, then pin & curl while wet, until hair is dry. If you need to speed up the process (and make hair slightly curlier), use a blow dryer on low to dry the hair while they are in the pin curls. 🙂
hi sonnet
thanks for the recipe! I would like to suggest trying aloe vera gel as an all natural alternative to using hair gel in this recipe. I find it works well. let water cool after mixing salt before mixing with aloe.
That’s a great tip! Thank you!
I used 100% lemon essential oil and this is going to be my go to do this spring, summer, and fall?
My hair unfortunately sides on the finer side, but it can also be a bit wavey when left to it’s own devices. So, I sprayed the solution all over and in my hair then scrunched every bit I could grab, then only twirled and pinned the top of my head. I started with dry hair and put a blow dryer on the pinned up areas for a very brief time.
I love the look! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
