Holiday Gift Idea: DIY Body Scrub Kit

Holiday Gift Idea: DIY Body Scrub Kit

How do I do this to myself every year? I know that December approaches quickly and yet I always struggle with brainstorming gift ideas and then actually making them. Can you relate to this?

Well, this year I’ve found a great solution: homemade body scrubs!

Winter weather can wreck havoc on our skin and using a gentle body scrub made from coconut oil and organic sugar is the perfect way to slough away dead skin cells while moisturizing dry skin. And who doesn’t love a homemade gift that encourages you to pamper yourself?!

This year I have created a variety of homemade body scrub recipes for gifting and the best part is that they are super easy to assemble!

For gift giving, simply add your body scrub mix to a cute jar, and finish with a bow or ribbon. Since coconut oil is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, it will help to preserve the body scrub and keep it fresh for up to three months.

One of my other favorite gifting options is to actually gift the body scrub ingredients separately in cute jars with the recipe. This allows the recipient to assemble their own scrub and tailor it to their preferences as desired.

To get started on this easy DIY project you’ll need three main things:

1. Cute canning jars

There are a lot of great options out there when it comes to fun jars. First you’ll want to determine the size of the jar needed and then how many gifts you are making. Some of my favorite jars include these Ball Quilted 4-oz jars , these Italian 8-oz canning jars, and, if you are gifting already-made scrub, I really love these large decorative blue jars.

2. Coconut Oil

If you follow my blog, I am sure you probably have coconut oil stocked in your kitchen, but you’ll definitely need a lot of it for this project if you are making multiple gifts. My recommendation is to buy the Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil in bulk. I actually purchased their 1 gallon tub, which gave me more than enough to use as gifts, body scrub for myself, and has been keeping my kitchen happily stocked for the past several months. I’ve also purchased large tubs through Tropical Traditions, my other favorite brand.

3. (Organic) Sugar and Other Goodies

Let’s talk body scrub basics. There are three parts to a good body scrub: oil, sugar (or salt), and something added for scent. One of my favorite body scrub scents is chocolate/cocoa powder because it feels so decadent when I’m rubbing it on my skin.  Lavender is also the perfect way to relax away the holiday stress and ease into the New Year.

Once you assemble your goodies, it’s time to get to gift-making!

These recipes are easy to adapt and can also be doubled or tripled to fill a larger jar for gifting. Just be sure to add a note wishing the recipient a happy holiday season, or perhaps, a positive affirmation for the New Year!

Chocolate Cake Body Scrub

Makes 1 cup

1 cup organic cane sugar

½ cup organic coconut oil

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

Mix ingredients together. Store in an airtight glass jar and use within three months.

Lavender Bliss Body Scrub

Makes 1 cup

1 cup organic cane sugar

½ cup organic coconut oil

2 tablespoons dried lavender buds or 7-10 drops lavender essential oil

Mix ingredients together. Store in an airtight glass jar and use within three months.

To use: At the end of your bath or shower, rub body scrub over skin in a circular motion. Rinse well and pat skin dry. Follow with a moisturizer as needed.

Note: The coconut oil in the body scrub can make the bath or shower a bit slippery. Be sure to carefully wipe down the tub after use to avoid injury.

I love these ideas, I just found a Gardener’s Hand Scrub about a week ago that I’m going to make for a dear friend that loves to garden. These body scrubs would be great for anyone.
