I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to ease into the weekend.
I’m ready to sleep in, lounge around in oversized sweaters, and spend way too much time browsing recipes on Pinterest. Bonus points if I can do all of this in fuzzy socks while drinking this.
What is this you ask? It’s energizing pumpkin hot chocolate! And it is amazing.
This hot chocolate is dairy-free and starts with a base of almond milk. Instead of adding sugar or other sweeteners, I naturally sweetened it up with pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and energizing maca powder. It’s amazing how the cinnamon combined with raw cacao powder adds a warming sweetness of its own. Of course, you can always add stevia or an alternative sweetener of your choice, but I find this perfectly satisfying on a crisp fall afternoon.
This hot chocolate has three of my favorite ingredients: pumpkin, cacao powder, and maca powder. I used fresh pumpkin puree from a pumpkin that I roasted, but you can also use canned pumpkin in this recipe.
If you don’t have raw cacao powder, you can also use cocoa powder. I usually opt for cacao powder because it doesn’t have added sugar and since the cacao beans are processed at low temperatures, this powder is full of antioxidants and minerals (like magnesium and iron) that you would find in the cacao bean.
Maca powder comes from the maca root, which has been used by the Peruvian population for centuries. It is one of my favorite supplements because it helps support the body’s endocrine system to naturally balance hormones. Maca provides a nice energy boost (without caffeine) and can help with chronic fatigue and low libido. It’s a wonderful supplement to use at any time, but I find it especially helpful as a natural PMS remedy. Maca is the perfect addition to this hot chocolate because it adds a sweet, malty taste without any added sugars! You can find maca powder in most health food stores or online.
